Painkiller – Cocktail of the Month
On a recent getaway to St. John, we indulged in one too many Painkiller cocktails, a perfect blend of rum, coconut, and tropical fruit that was as smooth as it was delicious. It didn’t take long before we realized that this cocktail needed to make its way back to the states for the BUCKFISH crew to enjoy. After all, when something tastes that good, it’s only right to share it.
The Painkiller isn’t just any cocktail. It’s a legendary drink with a rich history tied to the islands and a timeless connection to relaxation. Originally created in the British Virgin Islands, the Painkiller is more than just a refreshing drink, it’s a part of the island’s culture and way of life.
The History of the Painkiller
The origins of the Painkiller are somewhat cloudy, but one thing is certain—it’s a beloved cocktail of the British Virgin Islands. The drink is often credited to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, a small island in the BVI. This laid-back beach bar became famous for its creation of the Painkiller in the 1970s, where they served up this delicious concoction to thirsty visitors arriving by boat. Legend has it that the name “Painkiller” was chosen because it was said to “cure” everything from sunburns to hangovers, though, of course, we wouldn’t recommend using it as a substitute for actual medicine!
The key ingredient that sets the Painkiller apart is Pusser’s Rum, a brand with a history that dates back to the 1600s. Pusser’s Rum was originally the official rum of the British Navy, and its distinctive, rich flavor is what gives the Painkiller its depth and character. While the Painkiller may have started as a local favorite in the BVI, it has since gained popularity worldwide, with many beach bars and resorts adding their own twist to the classic recipe.
The Classic Painkiller Recipe

While you can find various versions of the Painkiller, the original recipe remains the gold standard. Here’s how to make the classic version at home:
- 2 ounces Pusser’s Rum
- 4 ounces pineapple juice
- 1 ounce orange juice
- 1 ounce cream of coconut
- Freshly grated nutmeg
Instructions: Add the rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously to combine the ingredients, then pour the mixture into a large glass or goblet filled with ice. Finish off the cocktail by grating fresh nutmeg on top for a fragrant and flavorful garnish.
Variations of the Painkiller
While the original recipe is hard to beat, many variations of the Painkiller have emerged over the years, each adding a unique twist to the classic drink. Some bars opt for different rum choices, while others experiment with flavored syrups or fruit juices. Here are a few variations that you might want to try:
- Frozen Painkiller: A popular twist for those hot summer days, the frozen version of the Painkiller blends the ingredients with ice to create a slushy, tropical treat that’s perfect for sipping by the pool or beach.
- Painkiller with a Spice: Add a touch of cinnamon or allspice to the mix for an extra layer of flavor. Some bars even serve the Painkiller with a cinnamon stick as a garnish, which not only adds a beautiful visual element but also enhances the drink’s aroma.
- Painkiller Punch: For a party-ready version, make a larger batch of Painkillers and serve them in a punch bowl. Just increase the quantities of rum, juices, and coconut cream, and garnish with fresh fruit like pineapple wedges and orange slices. It’s the perfect way to bring the island vibe to any gathering.
Why the Painkiller is So Popular
The Painkiller’s popularity isn’t just about its delicious taste, it’s also about the experience it offers. There’s something inherently relaxing about sipping on a tropical cocktail with the ocean breeze in your face, whether you’re on the islands or dreaming of the beach from your backyard. The Painkiller transports you to a carefree paradise with each sip, reminding you of island life, good times, and even better company.
Plus, the drink’s versatility makes it a crowd-pleaser. Whether you’re hosting a summer barbecue, a backyard luau, or just having a chill evening with friends, the Painkiller fits the bill. It’s a cocktail that can be enjoyed by everyone, thanks to its balance of sweet fruitiness and rich rum flavor. And let’s not forget the cream of coconut, which gives the drink a smooth, almost velvety texture.
Pairing the Painkiller
While the Painkiller is delicious on its own, it also pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods. Its tropical flavors make it an excellent complement to grilled seafood, especially shrimp or fish tacos. You can also serve it alongside fresh fruit salads, BBQ chicken, or coconut-based desserts like coconut cake or coconut shrimp. If you’re really looking to lean into the island vibes, try pairing it with a light, tropical ceviche or a plate of plantain chips.
The Final Sip
The Painkiller is more than just a drink, it’s an experience. Whether you’re on the beach in the British Virgin Islands or enjoying a relaxing evening at home, this cocktail brings the warmth and spirit of the islands to any occasion. We’re excited to share this iconic drink with the BUCKFISH crew and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. So, grab your shaker, break out the Pusser’s Rum, and let the good times roll!
