Moscow Mule – Cocktail of the Month

The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for over 70 years. It originated in the 1940s in Hollywood, California, at the Cock ‘n’ Bull bar on Sunset Boulevard. It was created by bartender John Martin and owner Jack Morgan, who both wanted to promote their new products: Smirnoff vodka and Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer.

The story goes that they mixed the vodka and ginger beer in a copper mug and added a squeeze of lime to balance out the flavors. The combination was so good that the Moscow Mule was born, named after the Russian vodka and the “kick” of the ginger beer. The cocktail became a hit in Hollywood and quickly spread across the United States.

The Moscow Mule has undergone some variations over the years, with different spirits and flavors being added to the mix. Some popular variations include the Mexican Mule, which replaces vodka with tequila, and the Kentucky Mule, which replaces vodka with bourbon.

Despite its popularity, the Moscow Mule was not immune to the ups and downs of the cocktail world. It experienced a decline in the 1960s and 1970s, as new and more complex cocktails emerged. However, it made a comeback in the 1980s and 1990s and has been a popular cocktail ever since.

The Mule Makes a Comeback

In recent years, the Mule has seen a resurgence in popularity, thanks in part to the revival of classic cocktails and the use of copper mugs, which not only look great but also help to keep the drink cold. Today, the Moscow Mule is enjoyed all over the world and is considered a classic cocktail.

The Moscow Mule is a timeless cocktail that has stood the test of time. It is simple, refreshing, and delicious, and has a rich history that is intertwined with the history of cocktails and American culture.
